CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
|
The Cycling Research Board (CRB) invites researchers, academics, designers, city and district planners, government officials and advocates to submit abstracts for the Cycling Research Board Annual Meeting 2024 in Zürich. This event is Hosted by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, and Network, City and Landscape at ETH Zurich in partnership with the Urban Cycling Institute. We extend a warm invitation to academic contributors from diverse disciplinary and cultural backgrounds to explore the dynamics of cycling and its impact on and contribution towards evolving mobility systems.
The CRB Annual Meeting aspires to foster interdisciplinary networking opportunities for academics, practitioners, and policymakers engaged in research, strengthening collaborations, and facilitating the translation of knowledge into actionable initiatives. It remains a distinctive gathering that leverages cycling to unite researchers from diverse fields, including social scientists, engineers, data scientists, psychologists, geographers, physicists, and others involved in cycling-related topics. We create a conducive environment that places mutual support in the development of applied and fundamental research, skills, and knowledge at its core.
CRB 2024 Program
Switzerland is known, among other things, for its chocolate, cheese, knives, watches, Alps and of course its punctual public transportation and its growing bicycle networks. Zürich is no exception, although with its hilly terrain, it can make even the most seasoned biker out of breath. At the top of a hill is the ETH Hönggerberg Campus where the CRB conference venue is located. On the night of the 5th we will enjoy drinks and dinner with a breathtaking view over Zurich, Lake Zurich and the Glarus Alps at The Waid.
ETH Zürich CRB24 planning team is developing this year’s event to include workshops, excursions and plenty of networking opportunities on the the day prior to the actual start of CRB. On the 4th of September all CRB participants are encouraged to attend ETH’s NSL Forum where we will hear presentations by MIT Professors Sarah Williams and Andres Sevtsuk as well as research findings from ETH’s very own E-Bike City Project. The Forum is catered towards the cycling crowd and will be very engaging.
Guidelines for Submission
We invite submissions from researchers at any stage — everything from wild new ideas to empirical results. Early career and PhD researchers are encouraged to contribute to the Annual Meeting to discuss their work and get inspired.
Topic Areas
• Culture & Institutions
• Infrastructure, Design & Planning
• Modelling & Simulation
• Policy & Decision-Making
Contribution Types
Individual Contribution
For individual researchers seeking to discuss their recent findings, new theories or methods or deliberate exemplary case studies they are investigating. Individual contributors will participate in joint-sessions with others researchers exploring similar solutions from different disciplinary perspectives or for a variety of challenges.
Group Contribution
For two or more researchers who want to team up to organize conventional or unconventional sessions. For example, groups may propose a workshop to share a hard- or soft-skills or provide a crash-course on a new method or tool useful in cycling research. A group of researchers may propose a workshop focused on unpacking and receiving input on some element of their joint work. Diverse groups of researchers may also join together to foster a panel or group discussion highlighting diverge and harmonious perspectives on what the “right” solutions are for which of the “biggest” challenges in the real-world or for cycling research.
Submission Requirements
- Type: Indicate if your submission is an individual or a group contribution.
- Title: Provide a title for your submission (15 words max).
- Name(s): List the people who contribute(d) to the individual/group work being submitted. You may submit up to 2 submissions as first author, but you may be co-author on multiple submissions. All authors do not need to attend CRB, but they just may want to!
- Contact: Designate one author as the contact person and provide their email and (mobile) phone number.
- Challenge: Briefly describe the challenge(s) (research questions) being addressed in your submission (1 sentence max).
- Topic Area: Pick one or more of the four topic areas listed above that your contribution addresses.
- Goal: Tell us about what you hope to take away from participating in and contributing to the CRB 2024 (2 sentences max).
- *Format Preference: Do you prefer your submission to be considered as a presentation or a workshop? Presentations allow you to share research/experiential results with a short Q&A at the end. Workshops allow for a short presentation of your idea, and then you can open the floor for discussion with audience and/or short activities allowing for direct audience engagement with your work, concept, dashboard, etc.
- Abstract: Please submit an abstract describing the research contribution being submitted (300 words max).
- Description of Audience Engagement (omit if not submitting as a workshop): Anyone submitting a workshop format should also include a description of how they plan to engage with the audience (500 words max). Ideally, what would you need to execute your workshop effectively but realistically, and how will you organize it? Do you need paper, markers, post-it notes, computer and projector for PowerPoint or showing a website, map or dashboard, etc.? We will let you know if we can provide the space/equipment necessary to host your planned workshop.
- Research Stage: Mention which stage of research will already be completed by the time of your presentation or workshop in Sept. Will you be creating the research question, designing the methods, collecting data, analyzing data, interpreting results, communicating results, submitting for publication, or will your results be published by then?
* Due to the confines of conference programming and the variety of submissions we will receive, we cannot guarantee that everyone will deliver their submission in their preferred format. We may request adaptations.
Review Process
Proposals submitted by the deadline will be reviewed through a single-blind process by several reviewers to determine if it is suitable for acceptance. The outcome of the review will be communicated to the contact person designated through the submission. That person will be responsible to inform their co-authors of the decision. Anyone is welcome to attend the conference regardless of whether they submitted an abstract or not and regardless of whether it got accepted. We are planning the CRB Program according to the number of presentations and workshops submitted and their themes.
