SLM2023: Sounds Like Music |

We invite scholars to submit chapter proposals for an edited collection on the intersections and interactions in the production, acoustics, and perception of speech and music.
Music and language are among the basic constants of all cultures in the world. The planned volume aims to explore the intricate connections between music and speech, delving into the distinctive factors that make this relatively young and highly interdisciplinary area of study unique and promising for the understanding, conceptualization, and modelling of human communicative expressions. The increasing interest, both within and beyond academia, in understanding the interplay of speech and music sets the stage for a comprehensive investigation. We seek contributions that either advance the state of the art in speech or music, or closely examine the links between speech and music, shedding light on the nuanced relationships shaped by rhythm, timbre, loudness, melody, articulation, and their respective verbal and non-verbal correlates.The volume is intended to be the first of its kind to provide researchers from all involved disciplines with an overview of the current questions, findings and frameworks at the intersection of speech and music – from acquisition to perception and cognitive processing. Based on this overview, the volume is in perspective also intended to help build bridges between disciplines and promote mutual citations and interactions.
Submission Guidelines
1. Abstract submission
Please submit a 500-word abstract by February 4th, 2024. In your abstract, please clearly state how your work relates to one or more of the above areas of interest as this will help us structure the volume and invite matching reviewers. All abstracts must be in English. Notification of acceptance of your abstract will be sent by February 11th, 2024.
2. Full paper submission
Upon acceptance of your abstract, you are required to submit your full paper by June 30th, 2024 (word count = approx. 8000, excluding references). To ensure the scientific quality of the volume, all submitted papers will undergo a thorough peer review process. Each manuscript will be reviewed by one of the volume editors and an external reviewer, likely chosen from the pool of contributing authors. The review will focus on assessing relevance, originality, clarity, adherence to the thematic scope, scientific rigor, contribution to the field, methodology, and overall scientific quality. Authors will be given the opportunity to revise their papers in response to the reviewers’ feedback.

The edited collection will be published by De Gruyter Mouton.

The publisher reserves the right to send the manuscript for peer review. Production time (including typesetting, proofing and printing) is 5-6 months.
